Corrales, Ishe Smith To Headline "Friday Night Fights" June 20

29.05 - Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior lightweight Champion Diego Corrales will face Damien Fuller, and super welterweight contender Ishe Smith will put his undefeated record on the line against David Estrada on June 20 from The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. This “night of boxing under the stars” marks the first boxing event from Southern California’s newest venue. The Gary Shaw Productions-promoted fight card will be televised on ESPN “Friday Night Fights.”

Corrales (36-1, 30 KOs), of Sacramento, Calif., who will make his first start in his native California in more than three years, captured the IBF junior lightweight title on Oct. 23, 1999, with a seventh-round TKO over Roberto Garcia. After successfully defending his crown three times, Corrales lost a battle of unbeatens when Floyd Mayweather defeated him in Las Vegas on Jan. 20, 2001. In the old-fashioned grudge match pitting two of the world's most talented 130-pounders, Mayweather had his way throughout en route to winning by 10th-round TKO and successfully defending his WBC super featherweight belt.

Since returning to the ring after a well-documented two-year hiatus due to personal, managerial and promotional problems, Corrales has gone 3-0 with three knockouts. In his first comeback fight, he registered a fifth-round TKO over Michael Davis on Jan. 25, 2003, in Atlantic City. Less than one month later on Feb. 22, 2003, Corrales stopped Roque Cassiani in the opening round in Memphis. In his most recent contest, Corrales scored a third-round knockout over Felix St. Kitts on April 24, 2003, in Gulfport, Miss.

Fuller (21-3, 10 KOs), of Detroit, Mich., turned professional at age 21 and earned a four-round decision over Peter Howard on Aug. 28, 1998, in Southfield, Mich. Overall, Fuller has fought 20 of his 24 professional bouts in his home state of Michigan, and lost just once. In his six-year career, the hard-hitting southpaw has scored five opening-round and two second-round knockouts. On March 29, 2002, Fuller captured the vacant Mid-Western Boxing Federation (MWBF) lightweight crown with a 10-round unanimous decision over Roberto Ortega in Detroit. Less than two months later, Fuller added the National Boxing Association (NBA) Intercontinental lightweight crown to his resume by tallying a 12-round unanimous decision over Michael Davis in Southfield. In his sole 2003 outing on April 5, the 25 year old saw an eight-fight winning streak come to an end when he dropped an eight-round technical decision to Lovemore N’Dou in Choctaw, Miss. The bout was stopped in the eighth after an unintentional head butt opened a nasty gash above N’Dou’s right eye.

Smith (11-0, 6 KOs), of Las Vegas, has fought eight out of his 11 bouts in his native city since turning pro at age 22 in July 2000. After defeating his first two opponents outside of Nevada, Smith made his initial Las Vegas start and registered a first-round TKO over Anthony Sanva on May 18, 2001. In his main event debut, Smith, a former lead sparring partner for Fernando Vargas, stopped late substitute Edson Madrid in the first round on Dec. 27, 2002. The three-year veteran floored his opponent with a left hook, and forced the referee to count Madrid out at 1:25 of the opening round. In his most recent contest on April 24, 2003, Smith earned a 10-round unanimous decision over Sam Garr in Gulfport, Miss. The 24 year old, who had never fought more than six rounds, was victorious by the near-shutout scores of 100-90 and 99-91 twice.

Estrada (14-0, 7 KOs), of Chicago, Ill., won his first professional fight via four-round decision on Oct. 28, 1999, against Tyrone Handy and has not looked back. The crafty, defensive-minded boxer, who followed up his first victory with another four-round decision against Terry Ford on Nov. 24, 1999, went on to knock out four of his first seven opponents. In his most recent bout on Feb. 7, 2003, Estrada, no relation to former “C.H.I.P.S.” star, Eric, earned a 10-round unanimous decision over Armando Velardez in Las Vegas.
