Mayweather vs. Sosa Prediction: An upset waiting to happen? Not Quite.

by Jim "Boxadamus" De Pierro

19.04 - I wouldn't at all be surprised if Sosa were to beat Mayweather given that 2003 seems to be the year of upsets. 2003 is a good year for wild swinging brawlers as Ricardo Mayorga and Rafael Marquez can both attest to. Another thing is that Floyd Mayweather is really the only big name fighter who was undefeated three years ago that is still undefeated today. Trinidad, Hamed, Delahoya, Judah, Mosley, Forrest and to a lesser extent Lewis and Klitschko have all fallen victim to notorious underdogs. Even Roy Jones isn't technically undefeated. I can't help but wonder if little Floyd is due. Still my head says that Mayweather should beat this guy with his nimbleness of foot fleetness of hand. I think Mayweather is overlooking Sosa but I think he is going to get through and win another close and possibly contraversial decision win like he did over Castillo the first time.

Victoriano Sosa will try and follow in his cousin Sammy Sosa's footsteps when he tries to hit a home run of his own by beating the highly regarded Floyd Mayweather. I will admit that I am not overly familiar with Victoriano Sosa and only briefly remember his fight with Paul Spadafora where he managed to knock Spadafora down twice while still losing on points to the Pittsburgh kid. I could be wrong and I actually hope that I turn out to be wrong in this case because their is nothing I would like to see more pretty boy Floyd Mayweather get his pompous ass knocked out but I don't see anything in Victoriano Sosa that leads me to believe that he will win come Saturday night.

Even though I don't believe Sosa is going to win their are a couple of factors that play into Sosa's favor which could contribute to an upset. Mayweather in recent weeks has talked publicly about moving up three weight divisions to challenge Oscar Delahoya in a bid to cement himself as a superstar. I don't know if Mayweather sees dollar signs, he probably does, or if he sees this a some sort of perverse way to get back at his father who currently trains Delahoya but either way Mayweather is crazy if he thinks he can knock off Oscar. Oscar Delahoya is no John Ruiz and Mayweather may have the ego the size of Roy Jones jr. but he isn't even close to the level of talent of Roy Jones. The fact that Mayweather would so openly talk about a fight with Oscar De La Hoya happening within a year shows that he isn't as completely focused on Sosa as he should be. In boxing overlooking your opponent can be a costly mistake.
