01.10 - Former IBF jr. lightweight champion DIEGO CORRALES, promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC (GSP), ended six weeks of high-altitude training in Big Bear, CA and headed down the mountain to Las Vegas today to begin final preparations for his showdown against former WBA super featherweight champion Joel Casamayor. The once-beaten former 130-pound champions will rumble, Saturday, October 4, at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in a 12-round title elimination bout, with the winner being declared the No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger for the IBF jr. lightweight and WBA super featherweight titles. The bout will be televised live on pay-per-view beginning at 8 P.M. ET / 5 P.M. PT, followed by the 12-round heavyweight fight between Evander Holyfield and James Toney.

“Diego reminds me so much of Tommy Hearns,” said Gary Shaw, Corrales’ promoter. “How many six-footers do you see in the 130-pound division who can keep their power? Diego is having zero weight problems. In fact he weighed 132 pounds in his last two fights. Once he reclaims his titles in this division, I anticipate him winning world titles in the lightweight, super lightweight and welterweight divisions, getting stronger as he moves up, just like Hearns.”

“I would love to rumble with Freitas,” said Corrales. “But it looks very unlikely. His promoter has already told us there is no way he will risk his meal ticket against me. In fact, Gary was told that whatever division I am in, Freitas will move up to the next, even if it means vacating a world title. That’s some world champion.”

Now under Shaw’s promotional guidance, it is a whole new ballgame. “Diego has passed every test on his comeback. He would have fought twice as many bouts if they were available. If Freitas wants to take the coward’s way out and vacate the title, so be it. As far as I’m concerned, Diego’s fight against Casamayor is a world title fight without the belt. Diego will do what Freitas could not come close to accomplishing when he fought Casamayor – turn his lights out. Casamayor is going to fall like a ton of bricks.”
