Culbert gets one more shot in his own hometown (again)

29.07 - BROCKTON --- Take two.

The Mike Culbert-Dave Hamilton rematch, which is almost six years in the making, is scheduled to take place on August 9 as part of the fourth Mohegan Sun FightNight New England fight card of the season. That will be one of the more interesting parts to the August 9 undercard at the Brockton Fairgrounds. The Cappiello Promotions fight card will be headlined by IBC and Irish heavyweight champion Kevin McBride and promising Brockton middleweight Ian Gardner.

It was Culbert, the supermiddleweight from Brockton, who handed the then middleweight Hamilton of Hanson the second loss of his career in 1997 and since that day, Hamilton has been seeking revenge. This fight was originally scheduled in May but Culbert was a last-minute scratch which will add even more to the drama on August 9.

Culbert has been through the wars of the New England boxing world and had been away from the sport in order to raise his own family in the house he grew up in. The former Massachusetts middleweight champion knows the dream of a world middleweight title shot has long since past.

Culbert is searching for that one final big payday and to reach that goal he will fight a familiar foe as he will be in a rematch. Hamilton is also a fighter who once had his own title aspirations and is still a crowd-pleasing fighter. Ironically, Pit Perron, who was Culbert's trainer for all of his amateur and for the beginning of his professional career, will be in Hamilton's corner on Saturday night.

"Mike and I were together for a lot of years and I hope when the fight is over he will still consider me his friend." said Perron.

McBride will defend his title on August 9 at the Brockton Fairgrounds as the co-headliner as he will fight Lenzie Morgan on the fight card that will feature Gardner, undefeated Willie Gibbs and Melvin Cumba.

McBride has not fought since St. Patrick's Day when he knocked out Najee Shaheed in the eighth round to highlight the first Mohegan Sun FightNight New England show of 2003. Morgan will provide an upgrade in competition as Morgan is a very deceptive fighter despite his sub.500 record. Morgan lost a split decision to Courage Tshabalaba on a recent ESPN fight.

Gibbs is quickly establishing himself as a fighter to be reckoned with as he has begun his professional career with 14 straight wins, 11 by knockout. He will be challenged by the Louisiana-based Charles Leggett who has begun his professional career by winning seven out of eight fights. Cumba is also undefeated in the early stages of his career (5-0) as he will face rookie Nathan Francis.

There will also be a Brockton area grudge matches as heavyweight Danny Sheehan will battle Randolph's Billy Mofford. South Boston's Jimmy LeBlanc will also be on the nine-fight card battling Marcus Luck.

Cappiello Promotions will also honor legendary boxing figure Babe Wood with the Mohegan Sun FightNight New England Lifetime Achievement Award. There will also be a special appearance by the Cappacione School of Arts who will perform a "Grease Medley."

The doors open at 4 p.m. on August 9 and the first fight is scheduled for 6 p.m. Ticket prices are $75 for gold ringside, $40 for ringside and $30 for general admission. The price of the ticket for anyone under the age of 14 is $10. There will also be a festival-type atmosphere at the Fairgrounds. Details on the entertainment beside boxing is forthcoming.
