Joey DeGrandis headlines Aug. 30 pro boxing card in Taunton

22.08 - BROCKTON, Mass. - South Boston-native Joey DeGrandis (29-5, 13 KOs) fights in Massachusetts for the first time in five years when he headlines the sixth Mohegan Sun FightNight New England pro boxing show, promoted by Cappiello Promotions, Friday night, August 30 at the Roseland Ballroom in Taunton.

DeGrandis (29-5, 13 KOs) is matched against crowd pleaser Danny Sheehan, fighting out of Brockton, in the 8-round dual main event. DeGrandis, the 33-year-old light heavyweight, now lives and fights out of Chicago after being sidelined four years due to an elbow operation. His last fight was a title loss to unbeaten WBO Light Heavyweight champion Dariusz Michalczewski this past April.

"I'm excited about coming home to fight," DeGrandis said. "I'm coming back to let everybody know that I'm a legitimate fighter, the real deal. - I'm a contender, not an opponent, and I'm going to prove that August 30. I've fought some of the best fighters in the world. I'm coming off a loss to Michalczewski, but I was hit in the back of the neck and tripped. They called it a knockout, but I've never been knocked out.

"I've been boxing 13 years and this is a business. I've only got a few years left and I want to make the most money that I can in that time. I want to get five or six fight and then fight Roy Jones. I'd fight Michaelczewski again, but I won't go back to Poland. It was different over there."

In the other dual main event, Philadelphia prospect Aaron "2-Guns" Torres takes on former Guyana Olympian Glen "Iceman" Forde in an eight-round lightweight match. Torres (9-1, 5 KOs), now fighting out of Brockton, has won seven in a row, but Forde (9-6-2, 5 KOs) is much tougher than his record may indicate having twice dropped highly touted Gary Balletto in their draw last February.

All fighters and bouts are subject to change.

The MSFNE show is presented by Cappiello Promotions, in association with Mohegan Sun, Holiday Inn in Randolph and Boston, Metro Ford of Raynham, Budweiser, and Everlast. Cappiello Promotions has an eight-fight deal with Fox Sports Net New England and the August 30 fights will be videotaped and broadcast Sunday afternoon (3:30-5:30 p.m.), September 8.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $50.00 ringside and $25.00 general admission. For more information or to order tickets call 508.587.5554 or 508.587.3370. Or visit Cappiello Promotions' web site at www.cappielloboxing.com.

Double barreled pro boxing action: Torres-Forde, DeGrandis-Sheehan headline Aug. 30 at Taunton

16.08 - BROCKTON, Mass. - Dual main events featuring the return of Joey DeGrandis will headline the sixth Mohegan Sun FightNight New England pro boxing show, promoted by Cappiello Promotions, Friday night, August 30 at the Roseland Ballroom in Taunton.

Logistical requirements for television could not be met in time for production and the site was switched from the Funway Café in Foxboro to the Roseland Ballroom.

DeGrandis (29-5, 13 KOs), 33, is a South Boston native who hasn't fought in Massachusetts in five years. Fighting out of Chicago for the past two years, DeGrandis' last fight was a title loss to unbeaten WBO Light Heavyweight champion Dariusz Michalczewski this past April. The former IBF Super Middleweight title contender is matched against crowd pleaser Danny Sheehan, fighting out of Brockton, in the 8-round dual main event.

"I wanted to put DeGrandis in a competitive fight," his new promoter Rich Cappiello explained the match-up against Sheehan. "We wanted good competition for him and he has that in Sheehan. Forget Sheehan's record (8-18, 3 KOs). His last eight opponents had a combined record of 116-9-6. He lost a controversial decision to Richie LaMontagne and went the distance with (WBO No. 5 Mario) Veit. Danny's already been training five weeks for this fight and half the time he takes fights on last minute notice."

In the other dual main event, Philadelphia prospect Aaron "2-Guns" Torres takes on former Guyana Olympian Glen "Iceman" Forde in an eight-round lightweight match. Torres (9-1, 5 KOs), now fighting out of Brockton, has won seven in a row and Forde (9-6-2, 5 KOs) is much tougher than his record may indicate having twice dropped highly touted Gary Balletto in their draw last February.

"Forde represents a huge step up for Torres," Cappiello noted. "Forde's tough. He nearly beat Balletto and fought Olympic star Francisco Bojado, too. By far this will be the biggest test of Aaron's young career."

All fighters and bouts subject to change.
