Head 2 Head with Vitali Klitschko

By Ben Yap

10.02 - Ben Yap: Assuming that the Lennox Lewis fight will eventually happen, what do you see as Lewis's main weaknesses and how do you plan on capitalising on them when the opportunity arrives ?

Vitali Klitschko: Lennox Lewis weakest point is his glass chin. I want to use that weakness. But at the moment it looks as if Lewis wants to duck me to fight Tyson again. But is this really the way a world champion should act? A real champion would fight the toughest opponents and not try to duck the mandatory challenger.

BY: You were originally a kickboxer. How did you make the transition to boxing. What are the similarities and differences between the two sports and which do you prefer ?

VK: I have tried so many different sports. In kickboxing I have reached every goal. I became a world champion six times (professional and amateur). Then I wanted to reach new goals in boxing. From kickboxing I use the body coordination. From kickboxing comes my unorthodox style which makes it pretty difficult for my opponents.

BY: What is your idea of the perfect fight ? Who were your boxing role models and what techniques can you share on how to throw the perfect punch ?

VK: The perfect fight would be a KO win in the first round. Max Schmeling and Muhammad Ali. The perfect technique is to counter your opponent.

BY: Everyone seems to be focused on the Ruiz-Jones fight or what Lewis plans to do next. With Chris Byrd now holding the IBF belt, is there any chance you will not wait for Lewis and instead go directly for the IBF belt and kill two birds with the one stone by avenging the small blemish on your record whilst at the same time gaining a world championship belt ?

VK: My next step is the fight against Lewis if he stops ducking me, but if then there will be a chance to fight Byrd again - perfect. I would definitely beat him like in the first fight until the moment a bad shoulder injury stopped me.

East Side Boxing thank Bernd Bonte & Vitali Klitschko for taking time out of training camp to make this interview possible.
