Interview With Norman Stone: "Ruiz - Jones Is A Done Deal!"

By Ed Ludwig

04.12 - I spoke with Norman Stone the manager of WBA Light Heavyweight Champion John Ruiz this evening as he was on his way to Boston for tomorrow's press conference. According to Stone the John Ruiz vs. Roy Jones Jr. clash is now official and it will be held in Las Vegas on March 1st 2003. I would like to thank him for taking the time to speak with Eastside Boxing.

Ed Ludwig: There are many reports coming out in regards to the John Ruiz vs. Roy Jones Jr. fight. Is it 100% official or do you still have details to work out?

Norman Stone: It is 100% official. The scheduled date is March 1st 2003 in Las Vegas.

EL: What was the hold up in signing the contracts for this fight? Many fans were wondering if this was another smokescreen.

NS: Well you know Roy is a businessman and he wanted to make sure everything was straight before he stepped into the ring and so did we. Everything is straightened out and now we are ready to go.

EL: Did you guys have any doubts at all as to whether this fight would actually take place?

NS: I didn't because Roy called me personally and told me the fight would definitely happen and not to believe what the media was saying and don't believe what other people say and I took him for his word. As much as people tried to convince me that he would never show up it was Roy Jones Jr. there today and he is ready to go forward.

EL: Since you and John were confident that the fight would be signed I assume you didn't have a back up plan just in case?

NS: Whom would John fight? We offered to fight the Klitschko's and they turned us down, we offered to fight Lennox Lewis and he didn't want to fight us. We are just waiting for the winner of Evander Holyfield and Chris Byrd. What else are we going to do?

EL: Has John been in training during the talks to make the fight?

NS: John has been training, low maintenance. He has been ready for some time now. Thursday we start the full training camp in Florida.
