10.10 - World Boxing Organization (WBO) Welterweight Champion Antonio Margarito will defend his title for the first time when he faces WBO No. 3 contender Danny "Dynamite" Perez in a rematch Saturday, October 12, 2002, on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. In the "Latin Fury II" co-feature from The Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim in Anaheim, Calif., Eric "Little Hands Of Steel" Morel will make the fourth defense of his World Boxing Association (WBA) flyweight title when he takes on WBA No. 1 contender Kaowichit Denkaosaen. SHOWTIME will air both bouts in their entirety at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Top Rank, Inc. will promote the fight card.

Question: Eric, can you give us your thoughts on your fight against Denkaosaen?

Morel: I am very excited to be in Anaheim and defending my title for the fourth time. This is my opportunity to shine, and to really show the world how much talent the lower weight classes have. This is going to be a very interesting fight and I am looking forward to it.

Question: Antonio, can you give us your thoughts on your fight against Perez?

Margarito: I have been preparing very well for two-and-a-half months for this fight. I am looking forward to the fight. This is when the excitement comes around, and I am really excited to come out and fight.

Question: Danny, can you give us your thoughts on your fight against Margarito?

Perez: This will be a great fight. I have been training hard for this fight up in Big Bear (Calif.). It is my time to shine. You will see Saturday night who will become champ. I know it will be me. I want everyone to know, you are going to have a new champ.

Question: Eric, how important is it for you to win this fight impressively and decisively?

Morel: It is very important to win this fight impressively. It is going to be on SHOWTIME, which is one of the greatest networks. This is a great opportunity for me to really do it. It is now or never. I am very excited about the show. I am extremely ready and in tip-top shape. It is going to be a very exciting fight. Both of us want to win, but my title is not going anywhere.

Question: Have you seen tapes of Denkaosaen?

Morel: I have seen tapes on Denkaosaen. He is fairly tall and right handed. He seems like a very smart fighter. It is going to be a good fight. This is the time for me to really prove all the talent I have.

Question: After this fight, do you see yourself moving up a weight class or two?

Morel: To be honest, I can move up whenever Top Rank is ready to make that move. I feel good at 112 pounds. I would feel better at 115, and even better at 118. Really, though, it is up to Top Rank. I will do whatever they want me to do.

Question: What else do you know about your opponent from Thailand?

Morel: We had a hard time finding tape of him, but we finally did and we have been studying it very carefully. We have two fights of him on tape, both of which went the distance. He is a very smart fighter. He is not a typical Thailand fighter - a fighter who just keeps coming forward. This guy moves his head and has good boxing skills.

Question: What specific things have you been working on to prepare for this fight?

Morel: I am concentrating a lot more for this fight. My baby daughter was born and it turned my whole world around. Now, I have someone else to take care of. I have a lot more dedication to boxing. I have a lot more time to put into my preparation for a fight like this. I am in tip-top shape and very excited. I cannot wait to fight.

Question: Is it more dangerous fighting an unknown fighter?

Morel: As a boxer, you always have to be careful, no matter where the other boxer comes from. He is going to be prepared, and wants to win as badly as I do. He is going to be ready to win. It does not really matter to me because I am well trained and well prepared. There is nothing really to say except that it is going to be a win for me.

Question: Based on the tapes, do you have any specific game plan coming into this fight?

Morel: My game plan is going to be pure moves, pure speed, and just be a little more aggressive than my previous fights. From what I have seen, mixing it up is going to be key. It is going to be an in-and-out fight. I am predicting a win for me. There is a very strong possibility it will not go pass six rounds.

Question: What will be the deciding factor in the fight?

Morel: First of all, my experience will be the deciding factor. I am 31 and he is only 20. My boxing skills, my talent, my speed and my power will also be factors.

Question: Any comments on the retirement of Ricardo Lopez retirement?

Morel: The only way I could have fought him was if he would have come up in weight class. He was fighting at junior flyweight and it is impossible for me to drop to that weight. I really want to fight the best, and he was one of the best out there but at a lower weight class. He had the opportunity to come up in weight class. He had nothing to lose. He did not do that. It was his decision and I respect that. Now that he announced his retirement, I will see what Top Rank wants me to do. Whether it is to stay at 112 or move up. I will be ready for whatever they want me to do.

Question: Antonio and Danny, what are the two of you doing to prepare for this fight?

Margarito: I think we know each other a lot better now. I know Perez very well now. We will do some different things and correct the errors we made from the first time around.

Perez: This time, I know whom I am fighting. I know Margarito better now, and know his mistakes. I have been learning a lot in the ring, and I am just ready for this.

Question: Danny, do you think working with Oscar De La Hoya made you a better fighter?

Perez: I definitely think De La Hoya made me a better fighter. By being up there with Oscar, I learned a lot of things working with De La Hoya. He showed me a lot of things about boxing and helped me for this fight.

Question: How did you happen to come to El Cajon (Calif.)?

Perez: Coming to El Cajon was my dad's decision. The gangs in Oxnard were getting kind of deep, so my dad brought us to El Cajon when I was 15 years old. My dad was seeing my older brother getting into trouble and getting involved with the gangs, so he decided we had to get out of there and moved to El Cajon.

Question: How do you think the fact that you knocked Margarito down in the first match will help you in the rematch?

Perez: I am not even thinking about that. We were not supposed to fight each other the first time. My opponent did not show up for my fight, and neither did his. So we ended up fighting each other. He was about 15 pounds heavier, and I was not really ready. We did not train for Margarito. Now, it is different. I know whom I am fighting. It is a new promotion, and both will be at the same weight. It is going to be a great fight. I am in great shape and am just ready to fight.

Question: What specifically did you learn from sparring with De La Hoya?

Perez: I learned how to lead and use movement and angles. He also showed me how to work and use the ring, rather than just throw punches without thinking. I learned a lot from De La Hoya. I will be smarter this time. What I learned in camp is what I am going to do Saturday night.

Question: Antonio, how has your confidence grown now that you are champion?

Margarito: When you win a belt, your confidence grows, especially when people start talking about you. I want to see if I can unify the belts and fight the best fights I can.
