Impressive bantamweight prospect Marquis Brewster of Providence, R.I., remained undefeated Friday in his second professional bout with a submission win on the undercard of “CES MMA 37” at Twin River Casino.
Brewster, now 2-0, defeated Pennsylvania’s Roosevelt Archie (0-2) via arm triangle submission at 2 minutes, 17 seconds of the second round. He debuted in June with a unanimous decision win over Vladimir Kazbekov on the undercard of “CES MMA 36.”
The preliminary card featured three bouts. The televised main card on AXS TV began at 9 p.m. ET with five bouts, including three world title fights.
The early candidate for Knockout of the Night occurred in the third and final preliminary bout when middleweight Mike Rodriguez (4-1, 3 KOs) of Quincy, Mass., flattened New Jersey’s Stepfond Ewins (3-4) with a flying knee at 3:38 of the opening round. Rodriguez has now won back-to-back fights since suffering his first career loss in January.
Also on the preliminary card, Derry, N.H., featherweight Dylan Lockhard (1-0) impressed in his professional debut, defeated five-fight vet Mak Kelleher (2-4) by unanimous decision, 30-26, 30-26, 30-27. Kelleher’s exceptional wrestling and ground game was the difference as he scored several early takedowns to slow the pace and prevent Kelleher from utilizing his striking. Anytime Kelleher picked up some momentum with his standup, Lockhard stemmed the tide with a key takedown, including one in the closing seconds to punctuate his dominant victory.
