Russian Rakhim Chakhkiev (16-1, 12 KO’s) used the wrong strategy tonight against WBC cruiserweight champion Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (48-2-1, 34 KO’s) and it cost him the fight by getting stopped in the 8th round at the Dynamo Palace of Sports in Moscow, Russia. Chakhkiev fought at a fast pace, too fast obviously, and by the 8th round he was fighting on fumes.
Wlodarczyk then knocked Chakhkiev twice in the 8th to get a stoppage with referee Daniel Van de Wiele stepping in to halt the bout. Wlodarczyk also knocked Chakhkiev down in the 7th with a hard left hook.
Earlier in the fight, Chakhkiev knocked Wlodarczyk down in the 3rd. He punished the champion in the first three rounds with hard body shots and a fast pace that made it tough on the Wlodarczyk. Chakhkiev found a lot of success fighting on the inside where Wlodarczyk was less skilled.
Chakhkiev continued to fight well in rounds 4 and 5. However, in the 6th, Wlodarczyk knocked him down with a left late. Chakhkiev looked like he had lost his legs by that point. He breathing heavily and clearly exhausted.
