Vitali Klitschko: “Sdunek was like a father to me”

Of the entire elite roster of professional boxers, Fritz Sdunek had one favorite, one boxer that he loved and cherished as their mutual career took off to unbelievable heights. Like Freddie Roach is a father model to Pacquiao, so was Sdunek to Vitali Klitschko. They not only appreciated each other in a professional setting, but were a true family outside of it.

“I was shocked to find out about Fritz’s death. I cannot believe it. Fritz has gone through many trials in the recent past. He beat cancer, and has gone through a heart surgery. It’s hard to believe that his heart no longer beats. I know many people, but have never met anyone with such a soul, and with such a truly big and kind heart. A heart that warmed everyone around him. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Fritz was my second father. He opened Germany for me, and taught me German. He introduced Wladimir and myself to professional sports. He shared our joy in victories, and our sadness in losses. He was a teacher not only in sports, but also life. He was my friend,” stated Vitali Klitschko.

To think of it, both brothers Klitschko were able to achieve their greatness in the sport of boxing due to not only Sdunek’s coaching, but his belief and dedication to both of them. A sports career encompasses not only the physical aspects of training, but an emotional one plays a major role as well. Having a coach that can be with you throughout your boxing career, as well as be by your side in support when personal life gets off tracks, is something that not every athlete is lucky enough to have.

“I thank fate, which introduced us and gave us the opportunity to work together for long 17 years. You will continue living, as long we are alive and remembering you,” concluded Vitali.
