When lineal middleweight champion Miguel Cotto squares off against Canelo Alvarez in a highly anticipated match-up this Saturday, few observers will be more interested in the outcome than Gennady Golovkin – the unified middleweight champion who is widely regarded as the best middleweight in the world. Golovkin is currently the WBC mandatory, and the organization’s president Mauricio Sulaiman has gone on record stating that the Cotto-Canelo winner must face Golovkin next. But will the winner actually grant Golovkin his deserved shot? And if not, will the WBC actually enforce its own mandate? These things remain to be seen, but we may have a clearer idea of the answers depending on the result of this weekend’s championship showdown.

Golovkin, while considered the best middleweight in the world, lacks the star drawing power commanded by both Cotto and Canelo. Golovkin’s recent PPV unification bout against David Lemieux, while reported as a success in terms of expectations, did relatively poor numbers considering Golovkin is the man many onlookers view as a possible new face for the sport following the retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr. In order to cross the next threshold on his path to stardom, Golovkin will likely need a win against an opponent like Cotto or Canelo. But there is good reason to believe that Cotto and Canelo are not overly eager to face Golovkin, and if history is any indication, the WBC is often inclined to make exceptions that allow champions to steer around their mandatories for various different reasons.

This edition of Rummy’s Corner pays tribute to Gennady Golovkin and his current predicament in the middleweight landscape while also providing a brief preview into the upcoming showdown between Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez.
