New WBO/WBA/IBF heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury and his team are ‘excited’ by the possibility of their rematch with Wladimir Klitschko and hope to secure the fight on British soil, his Uncle and trainer, Peter has revealed.
After Fury’s statement win for British boxing on the world stage, ex-champion Klitschko has today [Weds] confirmed that he will invoke the rematch clause in the contract and seek to recapture his former titles, with Team Fury hopeful a huge summer fight can take place on British soil, potentially at Wembley Stadium.
“We’re looking at possibly getting it in Wembley Stadium next year,” Peter Fury said to Sky Sports. “We are looking, me and [promoter] Mick Hennessy, to put the fight on in the UK, if we can.
“We’re very excited, and very pleased that Wladimir Klitschko is taking the rematch.”
There had been some speculation that Fury would be set to fight IBF mandatory Vyacheslav Glazkov, after the sanctioning body ordered a purse bid, although after his initial reluctance to be immediately forced into that fight, Klitschko’s decision to invoke the immediate rematch clause means that Fury can fully focus on what is sure to be another huge night for British boxing, wherever it takes place.
“There’s no voluntary, it’s a straight rematch with Wladimir Klitschko,” Fury added.
