Shawn Porter: No Concerns About The Catchweight – Porter v Broner

The catchweight situation is at the forefront of boxing more than ever right now, most notably with Miguel Cotto, who is using it as the preferred method of defending his WBC middleweight title this weekend against Australia’s Daniel Geale – a visibly larger fighter.

A similar situation, although not quite as extreme, surrounds welterweight Shawn Porter, who fights Adrien Broner as part of Premier Boxing Champions on June 20th at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas at a 145lb catchweight – though unlike Geale, he has a 10lb rehydaration clause woven into the contract that means he won’t be able to “blow-up” on the night beyond 155.

Talking to ThaBoxingVoice about the fight and the catchweight stipulation imposed by Team Broner, Porter was relaxed and confident about the job in hand;

“We going to do things the Porter way. You got concerns? I got none. I know people are hearing through the grapevine the stipulations and things we’ve agreed to. We agreed to them because we knew we could make all this happen. We’re not agreeing to this because we wanna fight this kid and make some money. We know we can make it an awesome fight for the public.”

Discussing the fight and his chances – Porter, who many are backing to out strength and out hustle Broner, said;

“He’s aware of some of the things I’ve done in the amateurs. In some ways we came up together through the amateur program. So he’s very familiar with me, in and out the ring. There is no animosity from me, I keep a level head and stay poised at all times. He’s walking into a lion’s den. You get in the ring with a lion then you can only run for so long.”
