Roman Gonzalez (43-0, 37ko) had been one of boxing’s best kept secrets for a good while until his winning HBO debut on May’s Golovkin/Monroe undercard saw him gain an army of new fans, and now the P4P WBC flyweight champion has been added to the October 17th HBO Golovkin/Lemiueux PPV card in a bid to further boost his Stateside profile.

“The date and place are confirmed. We will be fighting Oct. 17 in MSG,” Gonzalez’s manager Carlos Blandon said to ESPN.com

An opponent is yet to be determined, although Blandon confirmed that they were at the “advanced negotiation” stage with two possibles; Mexico’s Giovani Segura (32-4-1, 28 KOs) and Puerto Rican contender McWilliams Arroyo (16-2, 14 KOs), who is the twin brother of newly crowned super flyweight titlist McJoe Arroyo.

As the fight will be in New York, it is understood that Arroyo is the leading contender due to the large Puerto Rican fan base that come out to support their fighters there, although Top Rank’s American former unified flyweight champ Brian Viloria is understood to also be in the frame as an outside shot after calling out Gonzalez following his blast-out win over Mexican journeyman Omar Soto last weekend.

“If Viloria’s (team) makes an interesting offer to the promoter, then they can jump in the race before we make up our minds,” Blandon said.
