Provodnikov Hungry For Knowledge: “I practically don’t know anything”

It didn’t take long for Ruslan Provodnikov to make a name for himself in the sport of boxing. Over the years he has chiseled an image for himself, one of a champion with a granite chin, unstoppable stamina and a burning heart.

When crossing the ropes, Provodnikov is expected to throw an unbelievable volume of punches, while his opponent across the ring, knowing this, prepares for a long and painful night; war,

Nevertheless, Provodnikov is as humble as professional fighters get. In a recent interview, Ruslan admitted that he knows very little when it comes to boxing, and is always hungry and open for more knowledge.

“It’s never too late to learn. There is no limit. I don’t consider myself a very technical fighter; I have many gaps that I need to fill. Every day when I get to the gym, I try to learn more, especially while working with such a famous and experienced trainer as Freddie Roach. I listen to him, so to say with my mouth open, and try to do everything he instructs me to. I have been in boxing for almost 20 years, but I never say that I know a lot. I always say that I practically don’t know anything, and that makes me work much harder,” stated Provodnikov.

What he does have is the will to fight. That very thirst for action is what brings many fans to his side, knowing that his fights are likely to be action filled. But being that boxing is sometimes referred to as an art, raw power and stamina will only take one so far. It’s enough to get to the top, but certainly not sufficient to stay there.

Since the beginning of modern boxing, coaches have been asking their fighters to fight smart, pick their shots, and look for opening. Throwing barrages of punches is a one dimensional strategy, with most experienced fighters being able to take advantage of their opponents.

Provodnikov seems to have it all apart from technical skill. Will Freddie Roach add that element to Ruslan’s resume of attributes, or is Provodnikov stuck in his style and his approach to boxing?

Provodnikov will be training in the Philippines with Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao, possibly assisting Pacquiao in some knowledge of Manny’s next opponent Chris Algieri.
