Pressure Needs Placing on Khan Over Kell Brook Fight Says Eddie Hearn

After his sizzling one sided performance over Frankie Gavin last night in London – both Kell Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn have insisted once more that they are willing to face Amir Khan, yet while Hearn says pressure must be placed by the media on the Bolton man to force the fight – Brook says he isn’t going to hang around, preferring to chase other lucrative opportunities if Khan won’t step up.

At last night’s post fight presser, Hearn compared the two after Khan’s points win over Chris Algieri, insisting his fighter would end the American inside 3 rounds.

On Khan – who clearly struggled at times against a game and spirited Algieri, Hearn said;

“With Amir Khan, he’s getting to the stage where he’s going to run out of people to fight. And the problem with Khan’s performance (against Algieri) is he probably wasn’t motivated. And that’s why (next) we need a big name for Kell Brook. He needs that motivation and that fire in his belly to produce those great performances.”

“There’s so much more to come from Kell Brook – we really are just scratching the surface. And I hope you guys (assembled media) put pressure on Amir Khan ’cause who else is he going to fight in October or November?”

With all corners of British media seemingly suggesting Khan is still on course to be the winner of the Mayweather September sweepstakes, I’d be inclined to agree with Hearn, who seemingly believes that chance has now gone for the former Olympic silver medalist in the wake of Friday night.

If Floyd did indeed watch the Algieri fight, he would be confident of victory but certainly not of the fact it could be the mega-money, ‘ride-off-into-the-sunset’ fight he will surely crave if he does indeed choose to hang them up.

Brook himself said afterwards to Sky Sports,

“As for Khan it’s getting boring now. We’ve offered him, we’ve asked him to pick up a phone and talk but he doesn’t want to hear.”

“I’ve got this title, I’m in the welterweight division – why not come and fight me?”

Either way there are other huge potential fights for Kell Brook, notably Keith Thurman – who has previously insisted he is more than happy to come to the UK for the contest – and knowing the attitude of ‘One Time’ – I completely believe him. He has a large British fan base already and that fight would be a huge draw here.

Hearn has stated he wants a big fight next for the Sheffield fighter and is looking at late August or early September as a provisional date.

He said;

“We look on. We look at the likes of Brandon Rios, Keith Thurman and Manny Pacquiao. August 29 was pencilled in before Frankie Gavin, potentially at Bramall Lane – he needs those big fights and big names from America to come over.”
