Peter Fury: ‘Haye Bottled It With Tyson’

After David Haye twice signed to fight Tyson Fury and twice pulled out on him in 2013, citing injury, it left the giant Mancunian high and dry. Having put himself through two costly training camps ostensibly for nothing , Fury was left certain of one thing. NEVER would he deal with David Haye again.

Three years ago was the last time Haye stepped between the ropes at a rain soaked Upton Park, knocking out Dereck Chisora in 5 rounds – it followed their notorious brawl at the post-fight presser for Chisora’s challenge against Vitali Klitschko – and ever since that day, Haye has been popping up here and there on various quiz shows and reality TV programme’s, seemingly in an attempt to keep his name in the limelight.

The latest of Haye’s comments came just last week, when he insisted that he didn’t believe Fury would actually get in the ring with Wladimir Klitschko, implying that Tyson would take a softer option instead of enforcing his mandatory status.

Haye – whose own loss to Klitschko in 2011 resulted in the now infamous “toe-gate” saga, also suggested he would like a shot at WBC champion Deontay Wilder when he makes this eventual in-ring return.

His words didn’t escape the attentions of Fury’s trainer and Uncle, Peter Fury, who speaking to Steve Bunce as part of his boxing podcast, had a few choice words in reply;

“What we have there is David Haye trying to gate-crash and cherry pick his way to the top.”

“You know, he’s no longer the big superstar he thinks he is, and the world needs to know he bottled it with Tyson. We saw it with Klitschko too – he ran away from him and blamed it on his toe.”

Summing up the team’s attitude, Peter added;

“It’s a man’s sport and we’re fighting. Don’t listen to the crap that comes out of his mouth. It’s useless. Someone who wants to fight for the money but when you’re up against it, does a runner. That’s how we look at him.”

“He’s a pretty boy and it’s the actions of a fool – and they want him to go straight to the top and get a world title shot? It’s absolutely crazy. He wants to stay retired.”
