WBC super featherweight champion Oscar Valdez (30-0, 23 KOs) defeated previously unbeaten challenger Robson Conceicao (16-1, 8 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Friday night in their Top Rank Boxing promoted card at the Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona.

The rounds were difficult to score, as the Conceicao was out-landing Valdez every step of the way, but he was getting hit by the harder shots. In the end, the judges went with Valdez because of the big punches he was landing.

The scores were 117-110, 115-112, and 115-112.

Conceicao fought well enough to win, but he was the B-side in the fight and up against in facing the more popular Valdez. With the win, Valdez avenges his loss to Conceicao from 2009.

Luis Alberto Lopez Vargas (23-2, 10 KO) took super featherweight contender Gabriel Flores Jr. (20-1, 7 KOs) to school in beating him by a one-sided beating from start to finish to win an easy 10 round unanimous decision.

The scores were:

  • 98-92
  • 100-90
  • 100-90.

The fight was so ridiculously one-sided that it should have been stopped by the fifth or sixth round because Flores Jr. soaked up a lot of needless punishment.

Unbeaten WBO flyweight champion Junto Nakatani (22-0, 17 KOs) defeated former light flyweight champion Angel Acosta (22-3, 21 KOs) by a fourth-round stoppage victory.

Acosta took a big shot from Nakatani in round two that resulted in him suffering a bloody nose. It was a bad enough situation for the ringside doctor to take a look at it.

In the second round, Acosta, a huge puncher, knocked an overly aggressive Nakatani down with a right hand to the head. In the meantime, Acosta’s nose continued to bleed, resulting in the ringside doctor took another look at it in the third.

In round four, Acosta’s trainer had seen enough and opted to have the referee halt the fight. The time of the stoppage was at 0:32  round four.

Junior middleweight prospect Xander Zayas (10-0, 7 KOs) had to use his boxing ability tonight to defeat the tough Jose Luis Sanchez (11-2-1, 4 KOs) by a six round unanimous decision. The scores were 60-54, 60-53, and 60-53.

Zayas, 19, used his height and reach to control the fight on the outside through much of the contest. In the third, Zayas had Sanchez hurt, but he couldn’t put him away despite landing a number of solid shots.

In the sixth round, Zayas went for broke, attempting to stop Sanchez, but he couldn’t do it. Sanchez was too tough.
