Fighting each other in a long awaited rematch at middleweight, 43-year-old Shane Mosley (48-9-1, 40 KOs) defeated 41-year-old Ricardo Mayorga (31-9-1, 25 KOs) by a 6th round body shot stoppage tonight at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Mosley put Mayorga on the canvas late in the 6th. Fight was halted at that point with one second to go in the round. The official stoppage was at 2:59 of the 6th.

Mayorga complained about the body shot. He felt that it was a low blow. It really didn’t matter though because Mayorga was out of his class, and not in good enough shape to compete with Mosley in this fight.

For a couple of older fighters, Mosley and Mayorga made it mildly entertaining with their back and forth action. Mosley got the better of Mayorga because he was simply in better shape, but Mosley clearly wasn’t in great shape either. He looked like he was carrying around an extra 15 pounds of fat on his frame. Mayorga appeared to be 30 pounds overweight, and he just looked terrible. He still has his punching power, but his hand speed and stamina weren’t there tonight.

After the fight, Mosley said that he wants to go after a top fighter. He didn’t name any names, but it’s likely that he’s interested in facing the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Miguel Cotto or Gennady Golovkin. As big as Mosley is now, he’d have take off some flab to get down to 147 if he wanted to challenge one of the big names at that weight. Mosley doesn’t have the punching power to compete with someone like Canelo, Cotto or Golovkin. Those fights would likely be one-sided massacres with Mosley taking a beating.
