The snowball effect is in full force in the Mayweather Jr. vs. Pacquiao saga, with an avalanche of rumors and statements coming from all angles trying to confirm that the fight is indeed taking place. It is becoming increasingly difficult to derive any authenticity from so much information, but some news are definitely more reliable than others.
In a recent statement, MGM Resorts International Chairman and CEO Jim Murren, acknowledged that the MGM Grand has been booked for a boxing match on May 2, 2015, but was unable to provide any specifics: “I’m only just reacting to what’s in the paper. We are going to have a fight. We hope it’s a big, big fight. If it is the fight we hope it is, then it is the biggest fight.”
Currently there is no other fight slated for that date. Rumors are always abundant, but in reality we have yet to hear anything about May 2 being someone else’s fight night.
The venue being booked shows that there is dedication to this date and place, meaning that someone has agreed to pay to reserve it. Maybe this is another sign pointing to the mega-fight being close to announcement.
