Mayweather vs. Guerrero: Robert has very little chance of winning

By Rob Smith: WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) has done a very admirable job of making his move from the lightweight division to welterweight and succeeding in wins against Andre Berto and Selcuk Aydin. Not too many fighters can do something like this.

Guerrero now is on the verge of fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and it looks Guerrero’s good luck is about to run out finally. I’m sure he won’t mind losing to Mayweather because the payday that Guerrero will get for the fight will be well worth it for the mental pain that he has to go through in losing.

Guerrero will have problems against the faster and more talented Mayweather and there’s not much Guerrero can do to give himself a chance. He’s not going to beat Mayweather by fighting him at long because Mayweather’s reach is even better than Guerrero’s, and if anyone will be dominating at the distance it’s going to be Mayweather. But where Guerrero will really have problems is when he takes the fight to the inside and tries to fight Mayweather in close.

This is going to be where Mayweather gives Guerrero a beating with his short punches. Guerrero has a good chin but I don’t think he’s going to be able to take 12 rounds of getting hit with short punches with a lot of power on them like the ones that Mayweather will be nailing him with.

Berto was able to catch Guerrero with a high number of hard uppercuts in close, but where Berto made the mistake was by not throwing enough punches. He would throw a shot and then let Guerrero throw five or six punches before he’d answer him back with one. That caused Berto to take a lot of punishment and he looked it by the end of the fight with both of his eyes nearly closed.

Guerrero will have to keep it clean in this fight because if he fights dirty like he did against Berto, he’s going to get hurt by Mayweather. Holding and hitting and other such fouls will result in Guerrero getting paid back by Mayweather, and if Guerrero goes too wild, I think he’ll lose points in this fight. I don’t see a referee letting Guerrero go caveman on a star like Mayweather. He might have been able to get away with it against Berto, but I don’t see Guerrero being able to foul at will like he did last time.
