WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr says the recent quotes coming from a British boxing site about him being interested in facing Amir Khan are total lies. Mayweather says he didn’t make those quotes, and he’s not sure who he plans on fighting next.
Mayweather says Khan still has unfinished business with WBA/WBC 140lb champion Danny Garcia, who knocked Khan out in the 4th round two years ago in July 2012. Khan never avenged the loss to Garcia, and he still hasn’t avenged his losses to Breidis Prescott and Lamont Peterson.
Mayweather also says that Manny Pacquiao still has unfinished business with Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao was knocked out cold by Marquez in the 6th round by him two years ago, and he still hasn’t fought Marquez since then to try and avenge the defeat. Marquez reportedly priced himself out of the November fight against Pacquiao by asking for too much money.
The rumors are that Marquez wanted a 50-50 purse split, which you can make an argument he deserves given that he knocked Pacquiao out in their last fight and he brings a lot to the table in terms of his loyal Mexican fans who will help pump up the pay-per-view numbers of a 5th Pacquiao-Marquez fight.
“I could care less what Amir Khan say, just like I could care less what anybody say. I’m a do what I want to do when I want to and how I want to,” Mayweather said to Fighthype.com. “Listen, like I said before, he [Khan] still got Danny Garcia problems just like Pacquiao still got Marquez problems. So, you know, like I said before, they are still haunted by those fighters.”
So there it is. Mayweather is saying that Pacquiao still has unfinished business with Marquez and Khan still has problems with Garcia. Mayweather was kind not to include Lamont Peterson and Prescott when bringing up Khan, because he definitely has unfinished business with those two.
If Mayweather isn’t going to be fighting Khan or Pacquiao in 2015, then it leaves guys like Kell Brook, Danny Garcia, Keith Thurman, Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as the guys he’ll likely be picking from for his last two fights of his six fight Showtime contract.
