Mayweather Jr to Pacquiao: “You’re not a boss. On the chessboard, you’re a pawn”

Up until now, Mayweather Jr. has been hush-hush about his negotiations with team Pacquiao. With such a significant fight and a potential for a colossal payday, it is no surprise that they are trying to keep as much away from the media as humanly possible. Playing broken telephone is something that ends up happening via multiple interpretations from boxing fans and reporters. This could potentially lead to unintended difficulties in negotiations.

Having said that, in a recent interview with Shade 45 Radio, Mayweather Jr. opened up and briefly discussed the Pacquiao fight matter.

“Everything that everybody is just insinuating, what everybody been saying on TV is false. It’s not true at all… Pacquiao, he’s not in a position to call any shots as of right now and he’s not the A-side, so everything that everybody has been hearing has been rumors,” stated Mayweather Jr.

It seems Mayweather Jr. is not pleased with the deadline that Manny Pacquiao has recently imposed on the undefeated superstar. The question is: what exactly is ‘false’? Of what we have heard regarding their negotiations, which parts are the ‘rumors’?

“Do I want to fight Pacquiao? Absolutely! Are we negotiating? Absolutely! But has the fight been made? Not at all… But Pacquiao said that he agreed to everything. What did you agree to? You have no say so. You have a boss. That’s called Top Rank Promotions. That’s not called Pacquiao Promotions,” continued Mayweather Jr.

Apparently the fight is nowhere near being in its final negotiation stage, at least according to Floyd. It would be impossible for Top Rank to independently deal with this issue, without having Pacquiao and even Roach on the side, making the final call. It is true that Bob Arum is the boss as far as the bigger picture of the financial profit goes, but we all know that Pacquiao’s voice has the capability to veto or approve any and all decisions made by Arum.

Floyd has always been wary of Top Rank, and has never been able to communicate with them without animosity. In this interview, Mayweather Jr. points out that despite him showing disapproval of Pacquiao trying to be the boss when he is but a “pawn”, it is Top Rank that is responsible for the fight being so difficult to bring to fruition:

“We’re trying, but it’s been extremely difficult dealing with Top Rank. I don’t want to sit right here and point the finger at Pacquiao and say that it’s him, because it’s not Pacquiao. It’s his promoter. So lot of times when Pacquiao says, ‘I agree,’ you don’t have nothing to do with this. You’re not a boss. On the chessboard, you’re a pawn…They want to point the finger at the other guy, which is me,” concluded Mayweather Jr.

Like it or not, this pawn has been slowly moving forward, and throughout the years, has advanced to a Queen of the chessboard. Mayweather Jr. certainly deserves to dictate the rules of any fight which he is a part of, but it is important to pick your battles and avoid losing the fight and the payday to something minuscule and inconsequential, whatever that may be.
