By Steve Mabbott: A fight between WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s) and the struggling lightweight contender Hank Lundy (22-2-1, 11 KO’s) is being negotiated for January 19th, according to RingTV. The Matthysse-Lundy fight will be on the Devon Alexander vs. Kell Brook card at the Nokia Theater, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

This isn’t exactly the idea fight for the 30-year-old Matthysse, because you’d like to see him at least fighting guys from his own division and not pooling the lower divisions for fights against guys coming off of losses like Lundy.
Matthysse has beaten Ajose Olusgun, Humberto Soto, Angel Martinez and Sergio Omar Priotti in his last four fights. Matthysee stopped Olusgun and Soto in impressive performances.

Lundy, 28, is coming off of a disappointing 10 round majority decision loss to Raymundo Beltran last July in a surprising loss. It was thought by many that Lundy was better than the 31-year-old Beltran. However, Lundy couldn’t handle the pressure from Beltran and he was hurt a number of times in the fight. In 2010, Lundy was stopped in the 10th round by John Molina, the recent 1st round knockout victim of former WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco.

Lundy’s best wins have come against Dannie Williams, David Diaz, Richard Abril, Omri Lowther, Patrick Lopez and Tyrese Hendrix. Lundy does well against fighters that box and let him move around. Where Lundy tends to struggle is against pressure fighters like Molina and Beltran.

This fight is all wrong for Lundy. He’s not as powerful as Matthysse, and he’s going to be facing someone with an even better pressure offense than Molina and Beltran. Matthysse, 5’6 ½”, is only a half inch taller than Lundy, but he’s a much bigger puncher and it’s going to be really tough on Lundy in this fight.

This is more of a stay busy fight for Matthysse while he waits for his opportunity to fight WBA light welterweight champion Danny Garcia for the full World Boxing Association 140 pound title.
