Martin Murray: I’m Willing to Go to Germany For Arthur Abraham Fight

As long as he gets past durable, but limited Columbian Jose Miguel Torres (31-6, 27ko) in Leeds on Saturday night, as expected, then British 3x world title challenger Martin Murray (31-2-1, is keen on a challenge to current WBO 168 lb champion Arthur Abraham, and is prepared to again go abroad to finally capture the world strap that has so far proven frustratingly elusive.

Murray drew with Felix Sturm in Germany, in his first world title challenge in 2011, and was again considered unlucky 16 months later when he dropped a decision to former middleweight boss Sergio Martinez in the Argentine’s backyard. A third title challenge at 160 to Gennady Golovkin last February, in Monaco, resulted in the Brit taking the big-hitting Kazakh further than anyone prior, before being stopped in 11.

Now, having signed terms with Matchroom Boxing earlier this year, and making his 3rd appearance at super-middleweight in just 4 months, Murray says he is keen to chase the big-fights, and with Eddie Hearn’s close ties with Kalle and Nisse Sauerland – who promote Abraham – Murray says he’ll again go on the road if they can make that fight.

“I really want the Arthur Abraham fight,” Murray said. Eddie was with the Sauerland’s last week so hopefully it gets made.”

Abraham is expected to box once more this year before fulfilling his mandatory obligations against Mexican up-and-comer Gilberto Ramirez sometime in the early 2016, though if Murray can’t secure a shot at the German based “King,” who has also been linked to a fight with Felix Sturm, then he has his eye on fights with either IBF champion James DeGale, and – should he dethrone WBC champ Badou Jack in 10 days time – a bout with Hammersmith’s George Groves.

“James DeGale has the IBF and I hope George Groves win the WBC, as that’s a fight I believe we can make,” Murray continued.

“The winner of Chudinov v Buglioni would (also) be good. If Buglioni wins it would be great because we could have a domestic fight for a world title. If Chudinov wins, hopefully we could get him over here?

“I (just) want to win a world title,” Murray said.
