Lucas Matthysse: Expecting Fireworks vs Viktor Postol in October

When he fights unbeaten Ukrainian Viktor Postol (27-0, 11 ko) for the vacant WBC 140 lb title in California on October 3rd, Argentina’s Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34 ko) is once again promising action, something the big-hitting “Machine” has a tendency to deliver in spades.

Coming off of April’s FOTY candidate with Ruslan Provodnikov, in which Matthysse won a highly entertaining MD (115-113 x2), this opportunity to fight for the strap recently vacated by Danny Garcia is one that the knockout artist intends to grab with both hands, although realises that the awkward Ukrainian fighter – who possesses a 4 1/2″ height advantage, will be no walk-over, pushing him to prepare accordingly.

“One of the things we’ve done is to make sure I’m sparring against opponents who are the same height as Postol, just to make sure I’m comfortable for him,” Matthysse said.

“I need to feel strong. Viktor’s style is similar to John Molina’s style.”

Matthysse beat Molina in a thriller 18 months ago, but not before touching down twice en route to launching a big hearted comeback, decking Molina right back and knocking him out in the 11th round. On that occasion the American possessed 3″ inches in height and 2″ in reach, causing Matthysse a series of problems early as he sought to find his way into range, ending up beating Molina up on the inside over the course of the fight as Molina – foolishly – stood toe-to-toe with him.

“I’m expecting all action again. It’s for the world title, That’s my style of fighting,” Matthysse said. “I come forward and am prepared to give it all I have in the ring. To just fight. Particularly with this fight, something I really want, I’m prepared to go all the way with it.”

“Every fighter has their own style. The hit-and-don’t-get-hit fighters aren’t scared,” he added, perhaps referencing the newly retired Floyd Mayweather, who bowed out of the sport last weekend with his victory over Andre Berto. “But I think my style is more fan friendly. People come to watch excitement.”
