Heavyweights Adam Kownacki and Chris Arreola went to war on Saturday night in a that smashed the CompuBox record for most punches landed. It was a real fun fight to watch, Kownacki (20-0, 15 KOs) defeated a surprisingly fresh 38-year-old Arreola (38-6-1, 33 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The scores were 118-110, 117-111, and 117-111.

Kownacki vs. Arreola break record for punches thrown

Arreola and Kownacki threw 2172 combined shots tonight. It’s an incredible amount of punches thrown for heavyweights. Kownacki threw most of them, but he was mostly just throwing arm shots. Arreola had focused on throwing to the 266 pound Kownacki midsection, and that seemed to take the power out of the Polish fighters’s shots. By the second half of the fight, Kownacki’s legs were gone, and he was just standing upright throwing arm punches. Arreola had taken away Kownacki’s legs with his body attack. When a fighter does that, it forced their opponents to throw arm punches, which is what we saw tonight.

Boxing 247 had the contest scored for Kownacki by an eight rounds to four score. Kownacki, 30, won the fight, but it was closer than the scores handed down by the three judges that were assigned to the fight tonight. Kownacki was busy, throwing a lot of arm punches.

Arreola landed the harder shots

That’s what made it difficult to score the rounds, because Arreola landing the harder blows, but the judges decided that were more impressed with Kownacki being busier. You can argue that if you look at who landed the better shots in each round, you could give it to Kownacki by a narrow 115-113 score. It was close in terms of scoring the rounds for the fighters that landed the better shots.

Jean Pascal decisions Marcus Browne

Jean Pasccal (34-6-1, 20 KOs) knocked 2012 U.S Olympian Marcus Browne (23-1, 16 KOs) down three times to beat him by an eight round technical decision to take his interim WBA light heavyweight title in the co-feature bout on the card Pascal, 36, dropped Brown in round 4, and 2 times in round 7. Browne, 27, was fortunate not to have been stopped. The first knockdown in the fourth round was from a right hand by Pascal. Browne may have never recovered fully from that knockdown, because he was vulnerable to Pascal’s punches for the remainder of the fight.

Browne had just thrown a shot, and he was in close, and he was nailed with a hard right hand to the head from Pascal that he didn’t expect. the shot knocked Browne down on his backside on the canvas. Browne staggered around the ring after he got back to his feet. The referee could have stopped it at that point, because Browne was wobbling around the ring like a drunk. Being the A-side in the fight, it’s not surprising that Browne wasn’t pulled out by the referee

Marcus Browne cut in eighth

Browne was cut badly over his left eye from a head-butt in the 8th round. The fight was stopped at the end of the round, and Pascal won by the narrow scores 75-74, 75-74 and 75-74.

With the victory, Pascal, 36, is now the interim WBA light heavyweight champion. Pascal was just beaten by WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision last November. It’s unclear if it’s worth it for the two to face each other so soon. It might be better if Pascal challenges another light heavyweight champion like Sergey Kovalev, Oleksandr Gvozdyk or Artur Beterbiev.

Other results:

Wale Omotoso TKO 3 Curtis Stevens
Brian Howard TKO 1 Carlos Negron
