IBF 126 lb champion Lee Selby (21-1, 8ko) is relishing the chance to impress on his debut under the Premier Boxing Champions banner, which takes place October 14th against Mexican veteran and former multi-weight champion, Fernando Montiel (54-4-2-KO39) in Glendale, Arizona.
The Welshman – newly signed to elusive ‘advisor,’ Al Haymon – was impressive winning his title in May, when he forced a stoppage over a cut Evgeny Gradovich after appearing to dominate the IBF fighter of the year for large periods of the contest, and will be looking to do much the same against the admittedly smaller, and older, 36 year old Montiel.
“I believe my boxing ability is second to none and on my given day, I can beat any featherweight on the planet,” Selby said to Sky Sports.
“He’s [Montiel] very experienced, he knows his way around the ring with a 20-year career as a pro but I just believe my boxing ability will show on the night,” he added.
An impressive win moves Selby one step closer to a potential unification fight with new WBA (sup) 126 lb champion Leo Santa Cruz, who picked up his own title in last month’s thrilling “battle of L.A” with fellow Mexican-American, Abner Mares.
Back on UK shores there is domestic interest in Selby defending his title against unbeaten Leeds star Josh Warrington, who holds both Commonwealth and European featherweight titles. It is a fight Eddie Hearn would love to stage at Elland Road football ground sometime in 2016.
