Keith Thurman: Floyd Will Be Missed to a Degree / Plenty of Talent to Fill the Void

WBA (reg) welterweight champion Keith Thurman has joined the chorus of those who were pleasantly surprised by last night’s Mayweather/Berto PPV, which actually turned out to be one of the more entertaining Floyd fights of recent times.

Following the fight, which Floyd continued to insist will be his last, Thurman stated he now senses a changing of the guard in the welterweight division should “Money” stick to his word and retire.

“My impression is that he does have a 50th fight left in him but it’s up to the champ, man – what he wants to do with his life and his career,” Thurman said via fighthubtv.

While he stated he personally won’t shed a tear over Mayweather’s absence from the sport, Thurman believes the time has come for the next generation of fighters, including the likes of himself, Shawn Porter and emerging talent like Errol Spence, to rise to the top of the pile.

“I do believe he’ll (Floyd) be missed to a degree but there’s enough young talent to entertain the fans in the world of boxing today,” Thurman said.

“Floyd has a boring style but he has the style of a winner………. People want action and he doesn’t (usually) bring action, he’s sitting there just winning.”

Speaking about the valiant effort from fellow Florida fighter, Berto, ‘One Time’ added;

“Berto couldn’t handle his speed, Berto couldn’t handle his movement, and there were times in there where he (Floyd) was really letting his hands go, and it was entertaining.”

Yet as far as the question of “TBE” goes, Thurman would rather leave that open for others to discuss and decide;

“I think Floyd has definitely left his mark on the sport of boxing, now and forever. (But) The best ever? ……It is what it is but at least his name is there to be discussed about,” he added.
