By Rob Smith: Former world champion Hector “Macho” Camacho died earlier this morning at 1:40 a.m after being taken off of life support in Puerto Rico. Camacho, 50, had been declared brain dead following a shooting that happened last Tuesday in Puerto Rico. Camacho was hit in the face during the shooting and he clung to life in a deep coma until being taken off life support this morning.
Camacho will be remembered for his tremendous talent, his flamboyant show business approach to his fights, as well as his world titles that he captured at super featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight.
Had Camacho stayed at lightweight he would have stayed champion for many years, but he opted instead to keep moving up in weight to go after the bigger names in the sport such as Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and Oscar De La Hoya.
