‘Haye is Back for Anthony Joshua’ says Eddie Hearn

Matchroom Boxing chief, Eddie Hearn has stated his belief that former heavyweight world champion David Haye is returning to the sport to seek out a fight with his unbeaten future star, Anthony Joshua.

Haye this week announced his intention to return to boxing under the tutelage of Carl Frampton trainer, Shane McGuigan, and has claimed many times over recent months that he intends to get back to top level again in 2016.

Now 35 and not having boxed in over 3 years, Haye will have been keeping a close eye on the heavyweight scene in his absence, a scene that includes WBC champion, Deontay Wilder as the only other bona fide world titlist outside of his former opponent, Klitschko.

Titles aside, there is of course the potential of a big-money UK showdown with London 2012 gold medalist, Joshua, a fight that Hearn believes to be a driving factor in the ‘Hayemaker’s’ decision to return.

“I think that’s why David Haye has come back, for Anthony Joshua. I think he’s looking at that fight and thinking that’s the humdinger of British boxing and he might be right,” Hearn said to iFLtv.

“I’m very excited to see David Haye return. I think it’s great for the sport, I think it’s great for heavyweight boxing particularly. David’s bright, he knows what he’s doing and he knows the biggest fight out there for him is against Anthony Joshua.

“We, of course, are very excited about the potential of that fight. It’s gonna be difficult for David to get back used to being at that level, getting hit on the chin, hard, when you’ve been out enjoying your life over the last two or three years, but he’s an exceptional talent, so it’s gonna be interesting.”
