In a quick stoppage, WBA Super world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) obliterated a badly over-matched Marco Antonio Rubio (59-7-1, 51 KOs) by a 2nd round knockout tonight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Golovkin knocked Rubio down with a scorching right uppercut to the head and then a left hook to the head that put Rubio on the canvas. Referee Jack Reiss stopped the fight at 1:19 of the 2nd round much to the disappointment of the sold out StubHub Center crowd.

Rubio laid on his back and didn’t look that hurt, but by the time he did get back to his feet, he was counted out. The crowd booed the stoppage as they thought the fight should have been allowed to continue. The referee arguably could have given Rubio the benefit of the doubt for the fans that had paid to see it.

Rubio was too slow with his punches to make it an interesting fight. Rubio was able to land some shots in the 1st round, but he took several huge shots near the end of the round that likely would have knocked out most middleweights in the division.

After the fight, Golovkin said he wants to fight WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto next. “The punch I threw wasn’t a hard punch. I thought getting up. I think Miguel Cotto. Of course, I respect him.”

When asked if he’d like to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Golovkin said “He’s a good boy. [Julio Cesar] Chavez Jr too.”

Undefeated Nicholas Walters (25-0, 21 KOs) used his size and power to batter and stop World Boxing Association (WBA) Super World featherweight champion Nonito Donaire (33-3, 21 KOs) in the 6th round.

Walters dropped Donaire with a right hand in the 6th that planked Donaire face first on the canvas. To his credit, Donaire regained his feet at the count of 9, but the fight was stopped because he was too far gone to continue.

Walters looked to be on the verge of being stopped in the 2nd round when Donaire badly hurt him when the two fighters were trading near the end of the round. Luckily for Walters, he was hurt at the end of the round. He was able to recover in between rounds and come back strong in the next round.

In the 3rd, Walters landed a perfectly placed right uppercut that tagged Donaire on the chin that caused him to touch his gloves to the canvas to keep from going down.

It was pretty much all Walters after he knocked Donaire down in the 3rd. Donaire was cut over the left eye in the 3rd, and he stayed on the back foot from that point.

Walters did an excellent job of hitting Donaire with long jabs in rounds 4 through 6. Donaire had no defense for Walters’ long jabs.
