Golovkin v Lemieux Can Go Ahead Now Says Loeffler

Following David Lemieux’s all-action win against Frenchman Hassan N’Dam at the weekend, which saw the French-Canadian capture the IBF 160 lb strap, Gennady Golovkin took to his twitter and issued an open challenge to both Lemieux and promoter Oscar De La Hoya, insisting now is the right time – not later – to make a fight between the two heavy-hitting middleweights.

Sadly for the fans it seemed an imminent clash was some way off as De La Hoya spoke out to insist that his fighter was due to fight a mandatory defence later this year that would keep the two punchers apart – at least until 2016.

However Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler has taken to twitter to scotch that notion, insisting the IBF have no problem with Lemieux taking on the big-hitting WBA (sup) champion in his very next outing.

Loeffler wrote;

“IBF confirmed no issue with @GGGBoxing vs @lemieuxboxing in unification fight next, #BestFightingBest let’s do this”

There is only one winner if this fight comes off and that’s the fans. However I do suspect that as far as promoter Oscar De La Hoya is concerned, there is an element of wanting to protect Lemieux where possible for as long as possible, build his profile a little and seek potentially more lucrative match-ups further down the line. Such as a 2016 clash between Lemieux and Mexican star Canelo Alvarez.

Lemieux can be extremely wreckless and still appears to have a question over his 12 round fitness, looking extremely tired at points on Saturday so there will be plenty in the division thinking if they can weather an early storm, then he is very beatable. Especially over the 12 round distance and it appears obvious that a bigger puncher than N’Dam could easily stop him. It’s not like he isn’t there to hit.

It would appear Golovkin and his team are among those who hold such a belief. What a fight it would be!

The ball appears to be with Golden Boy and De La Hoya, who are yet to respond to Loeffler’s assertions.
