Golovkin thinks Mayweather and Froch are dodging him

WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) is aiming high for his next fight in 2015. He wants Floyd Mayweather Jr., Carl Froch, Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Unfortunately, what Golovkin wants and what he’ll get our two different things. Golovkin believes that Froch and Mayweather are ducking a fight against him by making excuses for why they can’t get inside the ring to face him.

Mayweather said he can’t fight Golovkin because he’s near the end of his career. That probably means it’s too dangerous of a fight for him right now. Froch says that Golovkin wants a catch-weight in order for him to fight him. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler refutes that notion, saying that they have never asked for a catch-weight for a fight against Froch. They’ll fight him at 168. So who do you believe?

“Floyd Mayweather or Carl Froch would probably be the best fights for me now. Floyd the weight below and Carl the weight above,” Golovkin said to cityam.com. “Both seem to be making excuses not to fight me unfortunately. At middleweight, the winner of Canelo v Cotto would be biggest.”.

It’s definitely true that Mayweather and Froch are making excuses for why they don’t want to fight Golovkin. But whether Golovkin could beat either of those fighters is debatable. They would be a big step up from the guys that Golovkin has been beating his entire career, and it might be too much of a step up.

Golovkin wants to fight the winner of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto fight, which will be taking place in November. There are many fans who believe that Golovkin will get neither of them. The Cotto-Canelo winner will very likely vacate the WBC middleweight title shortly after their fight, and then go on their merry way without ever fighting Golovkin. Canelo is proud fighter and young enough to wait Golovkin out until he’s old and gray before electing to fight him. In fact, Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya recently let slip what his plan is for Canelo in regards to Golovkin. De La Hoya wants to wait approximately two years before letting Canelo fight Golovkin, who will be 35 by that point in his career and possibly starting to show signs of slippage.

The problem is if Golovkin ages well and is still fighting at a high level two years from now, will De La Hoya extend it another two years before finally giving Canelo the green light to fight the Kazakhstan star? Whatever the case, Canelo will lose respect from a lot of boxing fans if he beats Cotto and then ducks the Golovkin fight.

“Maybe Froch. He is a warrior and it would be explosive. There would be a knock-out,” Golovkin said. ”I am happy to fight anyone between 154 and 168. Maybe Froch realizes what would happen. I would love to fight Carl. I have said yes to the fight.”

Golovkin should probably forget about Froch because the British fighter has kind of tipped his hand as far as his lack of interest in fighting Golovkin. Froch obviously has his reasons for not wanting to fight him, but Golovkin should move on and focus on the guys that do want to fight him.
