Golovkin has no doubts he’d beat Mayweather

It seems as if a new cockier version of Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) has emerged in the last four weeks since his win over Willie Monroe Jr. on May 16th. Gone is the humble, soft spoken Golovkin that never trash talked. The newer Golovkin is now unafraid to let his opponents know what he thinks of them.

In the case of Floyd Mayweather Jr., a fighter that Golovkin badly wants to fight, he sees him as no problem for him to beat. Golovkin says he’s 100 percent certain he would beat Mayweather if the superstar were to dare to fight him before he hangs up his gloves.

“Of course, I’d beat him,” Golovkin said about Mayweather to TMZ.com. “100 percent.”

So there it is. Golovkin sees Mayweather as just a walk in the park type fight for him, one that he would win without question. In this case, it’s hard to doubt Golovkin because he’s got the kind of punching power that would enable for him to catch up to Mayweather sooner or later and knock him clean out. Golovkin could miss with his shots for 11 rounds, but once he does land that one big punch in the 12th, he would have Mayweather possibly counting stars on his back.

Mayweather doesn’t have any argument why he shouldn’t have to fight Golovkin. After all, Mayweather defeated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez two years ago in 2012, and Canelo is heavier than Golovkin in weighing in the mid-170s for his fights. Golovkin comes into his fights at 170 or slightly less than that.

Golovkin says he would come down to 154 to fight Mayweather in order to make it an easier fight to make. He wouldn’t ask Mayweather to come all the way up to 160 or ask him to fight at a catch-weight in order to face him.

Mayweather and Golovkin are both seen as the best fighters in the sport in their weight classes, and it would be a huge fight to make. It would be a fight that would mean a lot more for Mayweather than it would for him to finish his career against the likes of Amir Khan or Miguel Cotto, of even Manny Pacquiao. None of those fights would prove anything for Mayweather because he’s already beaten two out of the three. Khan doesn’t have enough cache in the boxing world for Mayweather to get any credit if he were to beat him. Few boxing fans would care because Khan has already been beaten multiple times.
