GGG Intends To Be Ringside For Cotto v Geale

It could well be more bad news for Miguel Cotto ahead of this weekend’s WBC middleweight clash with Australia’s Daniel Geale, as his mandatory challenger, Kazakh wrecking machine Gennady Golovkin plans on making an appearance at the fight – ostensibly to force the Puerto Rican into facing up to his mandatory responsibilities.

Golovkin, who last month beat Willie Monroe Jr into submission with his power punching has told fighthype.com

“I want to watch this fight in person and look forward to fighting the winner to show who the real WBC middleweight champion is.”

Cotto, who has all but admitted he will vacate rather than face Golovkin – unless the fight is made at yet another catch weight – is eyeing an Autumn/Fall super fight with Canelo Alvarez – a fight that is all but a done deal in principle.

Potentially a very dangerous thing to do given the size and weight advantages he is conceding to Geale already. Should he lose this Saturday, it won’t prevent that fight happening, but boy will it take the shine off.

Yet Golovkin has other ideas, saying;

“A unification fight with the winner is very important to me.”

However given Golovkin has already dealt with Geale in impressive fashion, a rematch could potentially be a very hard sell assuming it’s the Aussie who is victorious on Saturday. Something that has a realistic chance of happening in my eyes.

It seems all too obvious that Miguel Cotto wants absolutely no part of Golovkin at this stage of his career either so it leaves GGG in a bit of a quandary.

The hunt for opponents for Golovkin will no doubt go on, with Britain’s Carl Froch blowing hot air over a potential fight that has next to no chance of coming together – and over the coming weeks and months, N’Dam and Lemieux contest the IBF strap and Billy Joe Saunders will challenge Andy Lee for the WBO.

It will more than likely be one of those names facing Golovkin before Cotto in my eyes as I just don’t think that fight is ever going to happen.

I hope I’m wrong.
