Veteran promoter Gary Shaw has taken a pop at the controversial and seemingly ever popular catch weight trend, ahead of Daniel Geale’s fight with Miguel Cotto this Saturday, saying at yesterday’s presser that he has ‘a personal problem’ with them.
Shaw, who has been involved in boxing in one way or another for 40 years, echoed the sentiments of many bemused fans when he said;
“I have a personal problem with catch weights. We accepted the catchweight of 157 and I’m not here to complain about it. We’re going to make the weight. It’s going to be tough but I believe that if any fighter wants to fight at what weight he wants to fight at, he has that opportunity – but he shouldn’t prevent his opponent from fighting at the sanctioned weight – which in this case is 160.”
Much has been made of Geale having a distinct size and reach advantage over the Puerto Rican, with opposing views as to how much advantage that will bring, especially following rehydration.
Shaw said of his man and his belief in him;
“I believe Daniel Geale is going to win this fight. I believe Miguel Cotto and his team have made a mistake. If they were looking at the Golovkin fight, thinking that’s the Daniel that will come into the ring, it will not be that same Daniel.”
