Garcia Versus Garcia? Mikey And Danny Are Reportedly Close To A Fight, Possibly In August

Despite the fact that he took a pretty stiff beating from the too big Errol Spence back in March, Mikey Garcia, 39-1(30) seems intent on sticking around at welterweight. Garcia, who against Spence went for his fifth world title in as many weight divisions, is reportedly close to agreeing terms to face former WBC 147 pound champ Danny Garcia next.

As per a tweet from top boxing scribe Mike Coppinger:

“Sources: Mikey Garcia and Danny Garcia are in talks for a welterweight fight that would take place in August at Staples Centre and a deal isn’t far off. One possible date is Aug. 31, and it’s being discussed as a PBC on Fox PPV.”

An interesting fight between two guys who have an exciting, fan-friendly style, Garcia Vs. Garcia could conceivably go either way. “Swift,” has won two of his last four yet he looked good in becoming the first man to halt Adrian Granados last time out, and after the April win Garcia called out all the big names at welterweight. Instead he seems headed to a big fight with former 126/130/135/140 pound champ Mikey.

A lot may well depend on how much the hammering he took from Spence took out of Mikey; while it is still not clear if he can make it as a welterweight, that he can beat any elite fighter at the weight. Maybe Garcia is just too small and would have been better served dropping back down to 140. But Garcia wants to be a true great, he wants to make boxing history, and the search for that fifth title will continue.

A win over Danny, 35-2(21) would likely go a long way towards seeing Mikey secure a second shot at a world title at 147. Neither man has ever been stopped and a distance fight would seem a good bet here. One thing though, is Garcia against Garcia really a fight worthy of going out as a Pay-Per-View offering? It’s a big fight, but not that big. Heck, some fans are grumbling how the upcoming July battle between Manny Pacquiao and Keith Thurman is a PPV fight – what will they say if this in-the-works fight between two former champions goes out for something like $60 or $70 bucks?
