Froch v Golovkin At Wembley?

So just a day or two after saying that he would be ‘flipping a coin’ over whether or not he will fight again – Carl Froch appears to be flirting with the idea of another huge Wembley UK show – a la George Groves – yet this time against the murderous punching middleweight Gennady Golovkin, who we saw break apart Willie Monroe Jr on HBO last weekend.

The Daily Mail, as well as multiple other sources online, are reporting that talks for the fight are underway, although I’m incredibly wary of how much of this is ego-satisfying bluster for “The Cobra” and how much of it is credible, thoughtful and ultimately SERIOUS consideration.

We all know Froch loves the limelight and after his incredibly successful career – approaching his 38th birthday – I have to place myself firmly in the cynical camp with regard to this happening.

In short – I’ll believe it when I see it.

Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn said of the situation;

“I’ve now spoken with Carl directly about this and he is interested. I only want him to take it if he is genuinely motivated because it’s a high risk fight.”

“But it would be massive and we can fill Wembley again. Given Carl’s interest, we have opened negotiations with Golovkin’s people (Tom Loeffler – K2) and they are very keen.”

I’m not surprised Froch is keen on this fight in fairness. Golovkin – not a huge middleweight – will have to move up to 168 to accommodate the Brit – and we saw against Monroe just how hittable he is. It would be a completely different style of fight, of course – and shows yet again that if Froch does fight on – he wants the cards stacked in his favour.

He has already said he has no interest in fighting the winner of this weekends Dirrell v DeGale fight – 2 bona fide super-middleweight southpaws with movement. All wrong for Froch as Andre showed in the 2009 Super Six. He wants a fight to go out on that is winnable, and this one – while dangerous -certainly is.

Does a 160lb GGG hit harder than a 168lb George Groves? I’d say so – and Groves put Froch on the seat of his pants. Jermain Taylor also famously managed to hurt and deck Froch. He spent his entire career at 160 before that.

It’s worth thinking about – especially for those who site Carl’s famous ‘Granite Chin’. Punch resistance fades you know?

At nigh on 38, with a new baby on the way and all previous signs pointing to retirement, it really will be interesting to see if the desire really is there for Froch.

Personally I’m doubtful – but it certainly is a ‘watch this space’ situation.
