Frank Warren: Disappointed by Last Night’s Dereck Chisora Effort

Queensbury promotions boss Frank Warren has admitted he was disappointed by heavyweight contender Dereck Chisora’s (22-5, 14ko) underwhelming 10 round decision over Brazilian journeyman Marcielo Nascimento (18-11, 16ko) last night, a fight that amounted to no more than a dull [televised]public workout for the former world title challenger in front of a partisan crowd at the SSE Arena.

It was Chisora’s second outing without long-time trainer Don Charles, whom he split from earlier this year, and he thoroughly failed to impress despite attempting a fast start against a fighter who was knocked out in 2 rounds by Chisora’s domestic rival Dillian Whyte in February.

“I was disappointed [with the performance] too, it certainly wasn’t one of his greatest performances,” Warren said to iFLtv after the fight. “I know he got rounds under his belt but I was expecting a bit more from him.”

It was clear Nascimento was intent only to survive and celebrated lasting the distance as if he had won a championship fight, animatedly shouting at the camera in Portuguese after the final bell tolled. Chisora himself looked sluggish at times and was unable to even appear to look good as the negative Brazilian back-pedaled and continually refused to engage.

Still only 31 years of age, ‘Del Boy’ blasted out Beka Lobjanidze inside a round in July, his first fight since the second loss to Tyson Fury in February. He remains insistent that he can still claim a world title, although after last night’s showing, one has to wonder how realistic that assertion is, even given the perceived [poor] state of the division at the moment.

After the fight, Whyte, who has sparred Chisora many times in the past and fights bitter rival Anthony Joshua in December, tweeted.

“@delboychisora hey bum you couldn’t even stop Nascimento and you wanna talk crap about me. After I deal with FakeJ you are next #delbum”

A next move for Chisora will be discussed with his handlers in due course.

“We’ll be meeting up next week and we will see where we go,” Warren added.
