As we near the date for Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, many are wondering how the biggest stars in the sport today would fare against legends from other eras. As one of the best, most popular fighters ever, Sugar Ray Leonard’s name is often brought up as someone who may have been on the level of these two current titans of boxing.
We caught up with Floyd Mayweather Sr., a man who actually fought Leonard, to get his opinion on how well both Floyd Jr. and Manny Pacquiao would have done if they had faced Sugar Ray Leonard in his prime. His response was as you might expect.
In addition to giving his thoughts on how those fights would have gone, Mayweather Sr. reflected on his own fight with Leonard which took place back in 1978. Entertaining as ever, he still seems to have some resentment over that meeting, which he lost by TKO in the tenth round. Mayweather believes he gave his opponent all he wanted and more, and if Leonard were willing, he would go at it with him again today.
