Floyd Doesn’t Need Golovkin Says Willie Monroe Jr

One of the names that keeps getting linked to Gennady Golovkin – despite the unlikeliness of the fight ever happening – is Floyd Mayweather – who after intense criticism over “The Fight Of The Century”, needs a decent name for his September date and final Showtime fight.

Whether Amir Khan, Keith Thurman, Miguel Cotto or Donald Duck gets the call, the talk surrounding Golovkin simply will not go away. Furthermore after we saw how Monroe and his pure boxer style was arguably able to nick a couple of rounds against Golovkin, there is a belief that Floyd might actually fancy the task if Golovkin boiled down to 154lb after all.

Willie Monroe Jr – who post fight on Saturday was quizzed on the possibility and outcome of a potential Mayweather/Golovkin clash – said the following via fighthype.com;

“I think people need to stop trying to put him up there with Floyd. He’s been a world champion for 19 years (sic – 17). Nothing against GGG but he’s been here 3 years, you know what I mean? Floyd Mayweather’s been representing this country and been champ for 19 years . Let the man live, let him have his titles. He’s done what he needed to do. He’s one of the reasons boxing is back at the forefront – let the man live, he conquered 5 or 6 weight classes already.”

Echoing the belief of Floyd Snr, who has previously stated his son won’t fight “no damn giant”, Monroe Jr said;

“There is no need for Floyd to come up to middleweight. He doesn’t even walk around at junior middleweight, why the hell does he need to come up and fight a middleweight? Don’t get me wrong – Gennady is good, Gennady’s great but there’s no reason for Floyd to do that. He conquered everything from 130 to 147. Trust me, I know Floyd – he’s not even a real 147, he could still be at 140 so why come up and fight a middleweight.”

“They said this to Floyd about Pacquiao. He beat him. If he did fight Gennady and beat him, they just find somebody else. Just give that man his credit.”
