Eggington Seeking to Send Message to Gavin With Big Win Tonight

British welterweight champion, Sam Eggington, is determined to send a message to ‘injured’ rival, Frankie Gavin tonight in Birmingham, by beating former foe and late notice opponent Dale Evans in style.

Gavin pulled out with 10 days to go until fight night, ostensibly due to a foot injury, although he has been pictured sparring since and was tweeting about being on his morning run just yesterday, prompting ‘conspiracy theorists’ to go into overdrive regarding the legitimacy of the injury given the fight is to be rescheduled for Matchroom’s December 12 PPV from London – a card promoter Eddie Hearn needs to stack.

The 22 year old Eggington has had to switch focus in the interim to prepare for Evans, the fighter who beat him in the ‘Prizefighter’ tournament in 2013, in what was just Eggington’s 4th pro outing, and the young Birmingham born fighter is relishing the chance of headlining his first card in front of what will be a partisan crowd in his home city.

“I’m in the main event and the plan is to put on a performance, show that I deserve to be a champion and prove I’m levels above when we boxed last time,” Eggington said to expreeandstar.com “If [Evans] wants a brawl, I’m confident I’ll come out on top. I’m more than up for that.”

“I won my titles against short, stocky and game opponents and that’s what I can expect from Evans,” he added. “However, a late notice opponent could be a bit of a banana skin.”

Eggington stopped Glenn Foot on a cut back in July when doctors deemed the former Prizefighter winner unable to continue, and victory for him tonight indeed sets up the rescheduled clash with former world title challenger, Gavin, in December.

Sam Eggington/Dale Evans tops the Matchroom Sport show from Birmingham, that will also feature former world title challenger Matthew Mackin back down at 154 lbs for the first time in 9 years.
