(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) Deontay Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) hasn’t yet finished his business with WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs) for this Saturday night, but already Deontay is looking past the fight towards a showdown with Britain’s Tyson Fury. Deontay is up for the clash with Fury if he can’t get a bout against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.
That’s the fight that Deontay really wants, but he’d settle for a fight against Fury. However, the one problem with that is Fury is the WBO mandatory challenger for Klitschko, and it’s unlikely he’ll take a fight against Deontay before he gets the Klitschko fight. It’s too dangerous, and Fury won’t want to take the chance that he gets whipped by Deontay before he gets his payday fight against Wladimir.
By the same token, if Fury gets destroyed by Wladimir, then there won’t be much point in Deontay facing him. I mean, why would Deontay want to get sloppy seconds fighting Fury after he’s taken apart by Wladimir. I’m not even sure that the World Boxing Council would sanction a fight between Deontay and Fury if it was a case of fury coming off of a knockout loss to Wladimir.
“If that fight does take place – in my perfect world – I would love to have a title defence against Tyson Fury, maybe in the UK, over there at the end of the year, then a unification bout against Klitschko. That would be a hell of a year,” Deontay said via Sky Sports.com.
As for Fury’s fight against Wladimir, Deontay was being kind to Fury by not coming out and saying that he’ll get destroyed by Wladimir in 2 or 3 rounds like a lot of boxing fans think will happen.
“We’ve already seen Tyson on the ground a couple of times with the small heavyweights. That’s my only concern. If he gets hit by Wladimir, what will happen? Will he get up?”
I think it’s safe to say that if Fury gets back to his feet, Wladimir would quickly obliterate him with a big left hook or right hand that will send Fury face down on the canvas in bad condition. He’ll be too hurt to get back to his feet after a knockdown like that.
Deontay isn’t sure whether Fury would be able to take his own power shots. He’d like to find out what he’d do.
“I pack a great punch and we’ll have to find out. If everything goes to plan then we’ll see.” Deontay said.
I think Fury wouldn’t get up from a knockdown from Deontay. It would be too hard of a shot for starters, and even if Fury could make it back to his feet, he’d be finished off with Deontay’s next right hand shot to the head. Fury would be in bad shape from a knockdown by Deontay, and likely on Bambi legs once he gets to his feet. Deontay could literally blow on Fury and he’d fall over at that point in the fight.
