By Michael Collins: After unbeaten heavyweight David Price (14-0, 12 KOs) dispatched with 45-year-old Matt Skelton (28-6, 23 KO’s) this Friday night in their fight at the Aintree Equestrian Centre, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom. The fight isn’t expected to be much of a fight because Skelton is in his mid 40s and he doesn’t have much power.
Price told thesun.co.uk “Dereck is a fight that interests me for the simple reason that he is a good fighter.”
Sadly, Chisora would be a big step up in class for Price at this point even though Chisora’s career seems to be sinking in quicksand with four losses in his last five bouts.
Price’s promoter is taking him along slowly, and some boxing fans think he’s waiting out the Klitschkos until they retire before he moves up the 29-year-old Price. That seems like the smart thing to do because Price had problems in the amateur ranks when taking hard head shots, and against the Klitschkos his chin would be tested early and often.
At this point it would be a welcome to see Price fight even someone like Chisora because his opposition has just been lacking to say the least. 29 isn’t really young for a fighter, but Price’s promoter doesn’t seem to be all that interested in matching him against the top heavyweights in the division just yet.
Chisora was knocked out in the 5th round in his last fight by David Haye earlier this year. The speed just wasn’t there for Chisora, and he ended up getting dominated by the much faster Haye then taken out. Chisora was also easily beaten by Tyson Fury last year. However, Chisora did given an injured 41-year-old Vitali Klitschko a lot of problems in February of this year in a losing effort. Chisora also gave Robert Helenius a lot of problems in losing by a controversial 12 round decision to him last year.
With Chisora you really don’t know what you’re going to get from fight to fight. While he looked good against Vitali and Helenius, he really bad in losses to Fury and Haye. If Chisora can fight like he did against Vitali and Helenius in a fight with Price, we could see Chisora pull off an upset if he can land one of his big right hands on Price’s fragile chin.
