Chisora vs. Fury II possible for June in heavyweight eliminator

chisora2A rematch between Dereck Chisora (19-4, 13 KO’s) and Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) is being talked about for June of this year in a potential heavyweight title eliminator bout, according to Chisora’s promoter Frank Warren. He’s interested in setting up a second fight between Chisora and Fury and putting it in a large football stadium for the Summer, provided that both of them win their perspective fights on February 15th at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK.

Both guys are fighting on the card in separate fights. For Fury, it’s probably not a big deal, because he’s expected to be matched softly against a weak opponent in a tune-up bout to get some of the cobwebs off after sitting idle for 8 months in trying to get fights against David Haye. But Chisora has a tough fight against unbeaten Ukrainian heavyweight Andriy Rudenko (24-0, 16 KO’s), and he’s at least as good, if not better, than Chisora’s last opponent Ondrej Pala. Chisora stopped Pala in the 3rd round last November, but the fight was a lot tougher than many boxing fans expected it to be.

Chisora was staggered several times by hard shots from Pala, and perhaps if not for Pala getting off balance and turning his back to Chisora, the fight might have been a little more of a nail-biter. Chisora didn’t waste the opportunity when Pala turned his back on him, because he immediately hit him twice in the back of the head to get a stoppage. It’s Pala’s fault for turning his back on Chisora, because that’s something you don’t want to ever do in your fights. The referee obviously should have stopped Chisora from hitting Pala a second time in the back of the head, but he didn’t and the stoppage was proper.

“The pair will meet in a massive rematch in June, Warren said. “Tyson beat Dereck a few years ago, and since then both of them have come on. It could certainly be a heavyweight eliminator.”

It’s probably a reach to see the Chisora vs. Fury II fight as a heavyweight eliminator bout, because neither of them are ranked high enough to make it an eliminator unless it was for the WBO heavyweight title. But for that to happen the WBO would have to skip Andy Ruiz and Deontay Wilder, both of which are ranked higher than Fury.

Fury easily beat Chisora by a 12 round unanimous decision three years ago in 2011 in a fight that took place in London, UK. In fairness to Chisora, he looked bloated at 260, and didn’t appear in good enough shape to go more than 3 good rounds, which is what we saw from Chisora. He fought well for the first three rounds and then gassed out, and lost the fight.
