During his recent uninspiring decision victory over Marcos Reyes in Texas, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr suffered a left hand fracture, that after surgery on Thursday, is looking like it will keep him out of action for longer than was initially expected – probably until the end of the year.
Speaking to ESPN Deportes, the former middleweight champ revealed that he was given X-ray results this week which showed that he would require surgery to repair the problem – an operation he underwent on Thursday under the supervision of Dr. Steven S. Shin.
“I was supposed to be back in the gym by the end of this month, but the hand kept bothering me, and I was referred to this doctor, who evaluated me again and told me that surgery was necessary, which changes my plans, but I hope to come out of this stronger,” Chavez revealed.
The Mexican star had hoped to box again around late October time, but will now have to put those plans on hold, and is keen not to let too much time pass as he eyes a rematch with Poland’s Andrzej Fonfara – the man who made him quit on his stool in April and who fights former WBO 175 lb champion Nathan Cleverly in October.
“According to what the doctor said, I’ll be three months without punching with that hand,” Chavez said.
“Obviously, I’ll be running and training in what I can, so I could be back in December, if not in January 2016, but I don’t want too much time to pass.”
