Canelo: ‘Ready for Golovkin’

After capturing the WBC middleweight title against Miguel Cotto in their highly entertaining fight in Las Vegas last night, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has stated that he will happily fight destructive Kazakh champ, Gennady Golovkin, in accordance with his ‘anybody/anytime’ boxing philosophy.

Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to the title held by Alvarez, and going into last night’s fight, ‘Canelo’ had been reluctant to answer questions about the WBA/IBF boss, who had stepped aside to allow the fight with Cotto to happen.

“I didn’t want to answer questions about Golovkin before this fight out of respect, but now they can ask me,” Alvarez said post-fight. “I know Golovkin very well, he’s a friend of mine.

“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again; I have respect for [GGG] but I’m not afraid of anybody, I’ll fight anybody at any time and if people don’t believe me, I’ll put the gloves back on and go another 12 rounds [now].”

The potential sticking point will likely be Golovkin’s right and proper refusal to contest middleweight titles beneath the sanctioned 160 lb limit, with ‘Canelo’ publicly stating he doesn’t feel that he is a bona fide middleweight – an excuse that will likely wear very thin, very quickly with boxing fans who are growing tired of the increasing trend for catch-weight title fights.

Approached by media for comment after the fight last night, Golovkin would only state via fighthype that he ‘was ready for Canelo,’ and that he had enjoyed watching what was ‘a good, very close fight.’
