Broner-Theophane bout reportedly still on, despite warrant issued for Broner’s arrest for assault and robbery

Adrien Broner has a problem. News broke yesterday how the often controversial fighter, the reigning WBA 140-pound champ, is wanted by police for a serious altercation that took place back in January of this year outside a Cincinnati bowling alley. Broner is alleged to have beat up a friend he was gambling with. Reportedly, Broner, who was armed, knocked the man unconscious, splitting his chin with the need for stitches.

The charges are listed as felonious assault and aggravated robbery. Broner, who is supposed to face Ashley Theophane in a title defence on April 1st, is now in serious need of a lawyer. Two sources have spoken to RingTV.com, and one says Broner’s upcoming fight with Theophane is in jeopardy, the second source says it will go ahead as planned.

“I seriously doubt [he will be able to fight] unless he turns himself in and makes some kind of arrangement with the court,” a police source told RingTV.com. “They would have to decide that. His lawyer will be able to make a request and it will be up to the judge.”

Meanwhile, About Billions President, Ravone Littlejohn said the fight “is on.”

“Yes it will, of course, nothing has changed,” Littlejohn said yesterday evening. “We’re going to get a physical now with the doctor. The fight is on. You can speak to Adrien in a little while if you want.”

Littlejohn was speaking to RingTV via a phone call and the line went dead before anyone could speak with Broner.

So, will the fight go on? Is Broner’s career in serious jeopardy? Does anyone have much time left for Broner, a man who has been in trouble with the law before?

Say what you want about Broner, but he has a knack for making the headlines, and the press he gets is not always pretty. Very much a love to hate figure, Broner has won major titles at super-feather, lightweight, light-welterweight and welterweight. Despite this, most fans have a hard time agreeing with the braggart’s boasts that he is a great fighter. Back in late 2013, when Marcos Maidana defeated Broner and beat him up in the process, millions of fans hit the websites to shout their approval.

Now, in light of these new allegations – and of course Broner is entitled to his day in court so as to try and prove his innocence – it’s likely “The Problem” will have an even bigger problem when it comes to winning over the fans who pay his wages.
